kernel_task
What it is
kernel_task is the macOS kernel itself: the part of the system that manages memory, hardware and every other process. It always shows up in Activity Monitor, and it always uses some memory.
Its most visible job is heat management. When the processor runs hot, macOS gives kernel_task a large share of CPU time so that other apps get less. That slows the work that is creating the heat, which lets the Mac cool down. So a high kernel_task number is usually a symptom of heat, not its cause.
Should you worry?
Not on its own. High kernel_task CPU means your Mac is hot or a busy app is pushing it hard. If it happens often during light work, look for the app causing the load and check that the vents aren't blocked.
What you can do
- Sort Activity Monitor's CPU tab and find the app that was busy just before kernel_task rose.
- Keep laptops on a hard surface so air can flow, and avoid charging and heavy work in direct sun.
- Unplug external displays or chargers briefly if kernel_task spikes when they're connected; a faulty cable or hub can trigger it.
- Restart if it stays high while the Mac is cool and idle.
